Hello,
03 May 2016

Last week took me to GWI’s Global Water Summit in the UAE, then to Serbia for a User Design Workshop and finally the United Kingdom for WRC’s annual Innovation day.

The urgency and pace was palpable. Ten minute roundtables with industry leaders, real time case studies where attendees present the analysis. The velocity is faster and faster challenging us all to scale our learning more urgently than ever.

I can not possibly summarize all the insights revealed at these forums, just the sheer size of GWI’s 2017 Global Market Report at four volumes says it all. We are now in a $720 billion dollar sector with healthy prognosis for growth and complex linkages.

There is, however, one much larger, and stronger common thread - a very personal and human need to create shared value in the water sector. That is what motivates me to get up and work hard each and every day. We all have an important part to play, every bit of knowledge sharing helps.

UV-C LED Applications in Water Disinfection

UV-C LEDs are smaller and offer higher ultraviolet power densities than mercury-based UV lamps. UV-C LED-based systems are just entering the water disinfection market, but their share is expected to grow rapidly as new system designs increases their applications.

Latrine Volume Reduction by BioBed

Via Water secured funding for a project to develop a conversion kit for existing SanPlat latrine pits into a Biobed system. The BioBed system builds on the impressive appetite of Black Soldier Fly larvae. According to recent research, this fly can convert fresh human faecal matter in latrines to virtually no volume.

High-tech buoys prevent illnesses from filthy water

Developed by MSU and USGS, the sensor-fitted buoys have been deployed on Lake Michigan in Chicago, where they measure multiple parameters of water quality in real-time. The buoys can run complex algorithms to extract specific data, and can also automatically disseminate information to the public via websites.

Self-Assembling Nanoparticles for Solar Water Desalination

Nanjing University engineers developed a cheap plasmonic absorber. By heating sheets of aluminium oxide pre-engineered with nanoscale pores, they cause self-assembly of the aluminum nanoparticles into a 3D porous membrane. This membrane can be used in a solar still, where it will efficiently convert solar energy into heat for the distillation process.
